There’s “vacation fishing,” and then there’s the Vaavu Atoll. If you’re like me and prefer the scream of a reel to a poolside cocktail, this is the trip of a lifetime. I just wrapped up a 3-day island-hopping expedition, starting right from the tarmac at Hulhule and ending with a cooler full of memories.
Here’s how we spent three days chasing monsters in the Maldives.
Day 1: Trolling the Deep Blue to Fulidhoo
The adventure kicked off the second I stepped out of Velana International Airport (Hulhule Island). Instead of a taxi, I met my crew at the jetty. Within thirty minutes, we had the lines out, trolling the deep channel between Malé and Vaavu.
By mid-afternoon, we were “popping” the reef edges near the atoll’s northern tip. The highlights?
- The Catch: I landed my first Giant Trevally (GT)—a powerhouse that nearly pulled me overboard!
- The Island: We pulled into Fulidhoo just as the sun dipped. It’s a stunning local island where the rhythm is slow and the stingrays swim right up to the beach at dusk. We stayed at a cozy guesthouse, eating grilled Red Snapper caught just hours prior.
Day 2: The Hunt for Silver in Felidhoo
We were back on the water by 6:00 AM. Day two was all about the heavy hitters. We headed for the eastern edge of the atoll, where the drop-off is steep and the Yellowfin Tuna are hungry.
- The Action: The morning was a blur of adrenaline-fueled jigging. We managed to hook into some massive Dogtooth Tuna and a Sailfish that gave us a spectacular aerial show before we released it.
- The Island: Exhausted but buzzing, we docked at Felidhoo, the capital of the atoll. The vibe here is incredibly authentic. We spent the night swapping stories with local fishermen over mugs of black tea, learning about their traditional “pole and line” techniques.
Day 3: Channel Monsters and the Final Dash
On our final day, we focused on the Fotteyo Kandu area—famous for its strong currents and even bigger fish. This is where the “big boys” play.
- The Finale: We spent the morning bottom-fishing for Groupers and Jobfish. Every drop felt like a mystery; you never knew if you were pulling up a 5kg beauty or a 20kg beast.
- The Return: We began the long cruise back north in the afternoon, trolling one last time. As we pulled back into the Hulhule jetty near the airport, the sun was setting over the runway—a perfect end to a grueling but glorious three days.
My Takeaway
Vaavu isn’t just a place to fish; it’s a place to be humbled by the ocean. Moving from island to island each night let me see the “real” Maldives while keeping the boat close to the best fishing grounds.
Are you planning your own trip? I’d be happy to share my packing list for the best lures and jigs to bring to these waters!
